15 clever and beautiful tiled backgrounds

Using a tiled background image is a simple and effective way setting a specific mood throughout a website or simply decorating what would otherwise be unused whitespace. It is a trend that has survived numerous death sentences, and is still being reinvented by many designers today.

ut-noUT.no is a soon to be released portal for hikers and other nature lovers.  The genius responsible for their graphic design has incorporated a (hand drawn!) trekking map into the background. It may be the most appropriate and well executed tiled background I have ever seen.

deletelondon-comAt DeleteLondon.com, a set of randomized backgrounds add another dimension to the user experience. Many of the backgrounds I’ve seen while refreshing the site frantically look very good, too.

carlcartee-comThe wooden texture is used as a background in many websites. Because it works. CarlCartee.com is a well executed example.

outlawdesignblog-comAnother example of a wooden texture background. At Outlaw Design Blog, it’s more than just a background.

snook-caAt Snook.ca, curls are a key design element, being used in the header and footer as well as the subtle but beautiful background image.

bridge55-comA concrete wall background at Bridge55.com.

colourpixel-comThe background at Colour Pixel consists of, well, coloured pixels. Simple and brilliant.

frenzylabs-comPixels are the theme of the background at Frenzy Labs as well.

carbonica-orgCardboard texture – Another appropriate background image seen at Carbonica.org.

brightcreative-comPart abstract, part grunge style stains, part wallpaper, the background at Bright Creative seems to be many things. It most certainly is beautiful and decorative.

enlighten-co-nzThe subtle blue ornaments in the background at Enlighten Designs almost look like water.

ma-ttMatt Mullenweg’s site is an orgie of ridiculously good looking design elements, one of which is a grunge style splatter background.

designspongeonline-comThe background at Design Sponge is some kind of fabric texture. Simple, subtle and neat.

youandigraphics-comAnother example of a tiled background made from fabric texture at Youandigraphics.com.

stroybass-comMosaic tiles make up the background at Stroybass.com. The gradient is also a nice touch that underlines the effect of being under water, like in their pools.

  1. Thanks for the kind words about UT.no! I did the design for the UT.no mini site. It is a placeholder for the portal that my colleagues in the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation are working on.

The pattern is designed by “drlogan” over at iStockphoto (http://www.istockphoto.com/user_view.php?id=964156). As you can read on his profile page, the topographic map is hand-drawn :) An amazing piece of work!

I only hope the final product will look as good as the placeholder! I’ve updated the post with a link to drlogan, thanks for the heads up. :)

  3. Apropos seemless patterns. I came across pattern8.com via webappers.com in my RSS-reader this morning.

  4. I found your blog on google and read a few of your other posts. I just added you to my Google News Reader. Keep up the good work. Look forward to reading more from you in the future.

  8. [...] [...]
